Be your boss and employee

Image
Well, this is one of those titles that can be a bit confusing because well first of all how can I be my own boss and my own employee as well. The original 5th rule for life according to Jordan Peterson is " Do not let your children do anything that will make you dislike them ". Well as many of you may know I do not have any children so I decided to take the rule and fit it into my life. The rule is... look at yourself from an outsider's point of view and weed out those qualities that make you cringe when you look at yourself doing them. It seems to me like we had been focusing more on the power of habit but when I read this chapter I realized that a person's character plays as much an important role as anything else in your journey to success. The rule talks about how each one of us has a moral obligation to be useful to the community and aim for the highest possible good.  To avoid poor behavior in children, Peterson argues to limit the rules imposed on them and use...

Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today

Comparison is a tool that is used to figure out or determine what or who is better. It is an indicator of what is the best over what is good. We compare people, prices, quality, quantity, locations and many other things in our lives. Comparison of people based on their current positions only has 1 issue in my view... it does not consider all the factors that led to the situation being how it is . As humans it is natural for us to always want to be better than the other person in terms of success or wealth hence you find yourself comparing with other. Back in the day, primary school to be more precise, I would always admire the rich kids who would be dropped off in all the fanciest cars and bring all the nicest food for break time and lunch. I would always compare myself with this kids and automatically declare that their life was much better than mine  and how I wish I could be them. I am sure a majority of us have all been through the same and I am sure you felt the exact s...

Make friends with people who want what is best for you

"Do not be misled : Bad Company corrupts good morals "~ 1 Corinthians 5 vs 33. Perhaps one can say I was fortunate enough to have a Sunday school teacher who constantly hammered this verse and its meaning into my head at a very young age. My teacher seemed to have understood the importance of association for human beings. Naturally one would go crazy if they were to be in isolation for a very long time without seeing or talking to anyone but the tricky part is you can also go crazy if you are surrounded by people and have been talking to them for a long time too. The important part now is to realize what kind of person you are dealing with and what kind of impact they have in your life . When choosing our friends at a young age it is all about who you like and who makes you feel good or who is the most popular or the prettiest. Character is not yet an issue because everyone is still growing and still trying to find themselves. As we grow older we now realize that the criteria...

Treat yourself like you would someone you are responsible for helping

From personal experience I have often found it very hard to give myself the same love and care that I give to other people. I believe that many of us go through the same thing were we neither know what self love is or how to love yourself. We try to be everything to everyone else except ourselves and this tends to make us bitter and ungrateful because we indirectly expect the same level of love and care from the people we are giving it. This part of the book (12 rules for life, Jordan Peterson) breaks down the whole idea of self love and self care. It is very important for us to remember that in order for us to fill others' cups we need to fill our own cups first before we can even think of others . Brother Jesus said it best when he said " How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while there is still a beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your broth...
