Stand up straight with your shoulders back
It brings me great joy to kick of this 12 part journey with an article on the first rule of Jordan Peterson's book (12 rules for life) which I understood to be the desperate call for self confidence and self belief. In this world of ours it is easier to be sad, depressed, frustrated, disappointed and just negative than it is to be happy, confident, fulfilled, grateful and just positive. To me this is as a result of :
- The need to fit in.
- The pressure from peer success.
- Supposed failure in achieving your goals
- Societal judgement
- Lack of self confidence
From this amazing rule, I understood that the only way people will ever take you seriously is if you would take yourself seriously as well. A lot of people believe power and wealth to be the outright currency in a society which lives in mediocrity, shuns those who try to break free and praise those who make it. A pastor from my church always said "If you do good people will talk and if you do bad they will also talk". What I got from this was that people are always going to talk whether you like it or not so living your life according to what people have to say about especially if it is behind your back is just a sign of a lack of self confidence.
Standing up straight with your shoulders back is a posture that asserts dominance, self confidence and a high level of competence. What it does is it gives you that extra push in whatever you do because the more you practice it the more confident you feel and the more ready you are to face the world head on. It is actually meant literally, one should always stand up straight with their shoulders back.
"And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast" ~ 1 Peter 5 vs 10. This verse to me shows that suffering is something that will always be there either emotionally, physically, financially or in any other way. What this verse also says is that the end result of this suffering will be restoration and strengthening. I strongly believe that all things work together for my good and you should too (And we know all things work together for good to them that love God... ~Romans 8 vs 28).
Next time you are faced with a challenge compose yourself, remind yourself of who you are and stand up straight with your shoulders back. Have a blessed week and Thank God its Monday
