Set your mind to it

"There is nothing you can not do if you set you mind to it" ~ Rick Hansen. This may not be the first time you have heard this and it definitely will not be the last. It has always baffled me as why nearly everyone I hear talk about success either in private conversations, seminars, songs and videos always always talks about how the difference between winning and losing is your mind. For the entire year that I have been writing articles for this blog my entire focus was on developing one's mind and in turn develop my own in the process. The journey has been difficult and my one confession would be I almost gave up within the first month. I was basically averaging 4-6 viewers for 4 weeks straight and a part of me was questioning my insistence on continuing with this. The honest truth is my belief and promise to try and help at least one person every week was stronger than the statistics that were trying discouraging me. I got the idea from  a book I read titled Love Revolution written by Joyce Meyer. She basically talks about how the world is in dire need of love and general affection and to me the only way I could provide that with the given resources was to use my love for writing as well as things that I had been learning as well throughout the weeks. My name is Sean Makonde and here are my top 5 tips of my first year at TGIM :

  • Have a winning mindset
Ask any top athlete in the world, the most important thing next to hard work and discipline has to be the belief that they can win. A winning mindset starts from when you open your eyes to when you close the at night ever single day. In every thing you do be a winner, learn something, gain something. Even if you have lost in reality do not let that sink into your mind, find something that you have won in that situation and run with it. We do not lose but we learn lessons and gain experience.

  • Be a competitor
In everything that I do, I always want to win. Ask anyone who know me and they will tell you how much I hated losing. Safe to say I used to get very very angry when I lose and this is because I have told myself that I can do anything I put my mind to. What I have then realized is by having this competitive spirit I end up being in a much much better place than I started even when I lose. For me now it is not a matter of winning by being better than anyone rather it is now a matter of winning by being better than the old me. I am extremely competitive against myself, I always want to beat myself so if I have some sort of success, shortly after celebrating I would get back to wanting to do better.
  • Know your self worth
In life one needs to master the art of being able to walk away. Without this, it is very very difficult to get exactly what you want because you will always be settling for second best. My number one rule is I never let people walk all over me and I learnt this from a very very traumatizing relationship which drained away my self confidence, killed my self love and basically just stopped my entire life. The day I decided to walk away and just let it be, I realized that I am actually not as bad as they painted me to be as a matter of fact I started seeing myself as God's gift to the world and I believe everyone is God's gift to the world so we should carry ourselves likewise. So when people ask who I think I am my answer is I am a child of God and my father owns everything so I have a right to act accordingly. If you want to know who you are as well read John 1 vs 12 and thank me later.

  • Be serious about your dreams
Dreams, hopes and aspirations are a very tricky subject in our African culture. We tend to value security more than happiness and this often comes by sacrificing our dreams and doing what you love just to feel secure in society. Well my advice as a young 23 year old is if you are not doing what you love then you are wasting away your very short short time on this planet because let's be honest life is very very short and I do not think living it and not doing what you love is just wasting it.
  • Know what it takes
There is nothing more beautiful than having that vision of were you want to be and maybe even day dreaming abut it a bit. The crucial aspect of this practice is to then open your eyes and see the reality of what it is going to take to get you were you want to be. Be afraid of failure more than the amount of work that will need to be put in. Know what it takes to achieve your goals and just go all in and do it.
It has been a good year for me at TGIM and I have taught myself so much through the articles I write and I sincerely hope that what I have been sharing and will continue to share has helped you just as much or even more than it helped me. Have a blessed week and Thank God its Monday
