Peer pressure comes in many forms, the ugliest being peer pressure which would lead into drugs and alcohol abuse. However there is one type of peer pressure that is hardly spoken off or is just brushed aside and justified as harmless competition. This type of peer pressure is often found in young adults say from the ages of 18 going onwards to the mid 30s. It honestly feels as if life is just a huge competition to see who makes it better than the next person. I will not lie...what used to be the hardest thing for me was to accept is defeat and this is because I have always seen myself as a highly competitive person. It is only most recently that I discovered pacing yourself by using others' progress is not only counter productive but it is bad for your own mental health. The reason behind this is :
- There will always be someone prettier, faster, more intelligent or more likeable than you are. As a matter of fact there will always be someone who is better than you.
- People come from different background with different mindsets and trying to go stride for stride will only make you become that person and live out their goals.
- Your only true opponent is you
We all have different paths in life, even if we are in the same company or field of work understand that we all bring different things to the table that is because we are all unique in everything we do. I feel like the problem now comes when "life progression peer pressure" comes in to play where you discover your peers progressing more than you are even though you are putting in just as much if not more effort than them. I have felt this numerous times and it is the worst feeling of self-disappointment you will ever get. I have come up with a theory though which I have pieced together from the stuff that I heard, researched and discovered for myself before I made the decision to make life "fair" by making it a Me vs Me match instead of Me vs The World because in my view that was why Christ came, to do the seemingly impossible so that we may not have to worry or fear about it....John 16 vs 33 says "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world".
Now doesn't that feel amazing...to know that someone has already conquered the world for you. It means that your success is not determined by any external factors anymore, rather your success, good health, good relationships and anything you may desire is determined by what is inside you. I hear a lot of people speak about how real estate is the most important asset one can have and it is true. However I think our minds are the first piece of real estate we should invest in heavily.
Compete against yourself and continuously aim to be better that you were yesterday, learn new things, acquire new skills, find new hobbies...anything to make you a better person. Focus less on how well your peers are doing rather be happy for them but never be discouraged because we are all running our own race. Have a blessed week and Thank God its Monday
This be the hardest hobbit to get through due to the generation Zealand being all about the Internet but not impossible. Thanks
