It starts NOW!!!
Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished by a certain deadline. It could be further stated as a habitual or intentional delay of starting or finishing a task despite knowing it might have negative consequences. This is the best definition of procrastination that I have come across so far. In my view procrastination is the biggest dream killer next to fear. The terrible thing about procrastination is that putting off today's task adds to the burden of tomorrow.
So how does one become more productive and beat the cycle of procrastination ?
I tried to answer that question in an earlier article titled " The knowledge action gap "(click link to view) where I touched a bit on how we often know exactly what to do and the information on how best to do it is at our disposal but it is the doing part that is always missing. So as promised I will share the Action Plan which I have been using for the past month which has been very helpful for me and has "forced" me to complete a lot of tasks that I have been putting off for a very long time

- Have a weekly plan
State that which you want to have achieved by the end of the week. It could be an assignment or a project that you have been working on, it can be anything but you just need to write it down. This weekly goal should be the most important thing you would want to do this week. - Why is the goal important ?
After having stated the goal I found it to be very helpful to write down why you want to achieve this goal by the end of the week. This will serve as a constant reminder as to why you are starting to work on this specific goal whenever you feel like not doing anything. You can describe how good you will feel or how far ahead you will be. For others incentives may work so you can promise yourself a treat which can be a reward for all the hard work that you would have put in. - Top 3 tasks of the week
Think about the 3 biggest steps you can take in order to reach your final goal this week. Think about them carefully because they are the ones that will determine what you will be doing everyday in order to reach the weekly goal. After listing the 3, state again why these 3 are important individually so that you always stay on course. - Have a daily plan
After stating your weekly plan and the 3 most important tasks we now get to the fun part. For every single day of the week you should again write down the most important task of the day which is directly linked to the completion of either one of the top 3 tasks of the week. This task should be completed no matter what, even if it means staying up late in order to finish it. - Secondary Tasks
Take these as the building blocks to your main task of the day. Break down the task into smaller more manageable tasks which should be linked to the main task. You are allowed to add in a few non-related tasks however completion of the most important ones should be prioritized. - Notes
After a very long day of hard work I often write notes which may help me tomorrow. This part is optional because it may not be necessary for others.
Remember " A goal without a plan is just a wish ". I have designed a simple Action plan which I am wiling to send to anyone who feels like they need to become more productive and achieve their goals without procrastination holding them back.
